So my mother wants to start WoW
Ok, my 50 yr old mother has taken an interest in WoW. I'm going to help her get started, but I don't really know where. Any suggestions on which server type/server/faction she should roll on? Which ever server has the least ganking/barrens chat type bs is what I'm thinking would be most appropriate. Please give me some suggestions. Thanks!
Well, normally I would say have her roll on the same server you are on. However if you are on a PvP server, that may be difficult for her to start with.

Way to go Mom!
Make sure she leaves on the profanity filter and stays on a PvE server. Let her explore and try the different chars for both factions though if you want her to avoid barrens chat, alliance is the only way to go.

I'm still hoping to get my mother playing, but as she is not very adept at installing her own programs, doesn't have computer-literate friends nearby and is over 6000 miles away from me, it will take some doing. Once we do manage it, I'll definitely make sure she's on one of the servers I play on - probably Lothar, though she is 'geeky' enough to fit on an RP server too. (She has played D&D with us). Last time she visited, it was hard to pull her away from 'Age of Empires' in time for her to catch the flight home!
She's ... going to be 80 next year.

At game release I started ally side on a pve server with my son. I played a paly to 60 but then went horde side on a pvp server and been there since.
I don't think it really matters what type of server she creates on. She needs to keep in mind some people will not be nice when they find out she's a girl and old. As long as she can stand up for herself and try to play well she should do fine wherever she plays.

Keep us updated on how the Mom is doing.

She's got a pally on some normal server, but I think she's going to try something else on PVP for a little more action. She liked killing things more then gathering and turning in Q's.
Work in progress I guess.
BTW, thanks for being so supportive. On the official WoW site, I ended up with 2 pages of arguing over ToS.

Yeah... official forums IMO are pretty much pointless nowadays. Too many kids/trolls to have any type of civilized conversations.
Glad to hear your moms enjoying the game... now if I could only get my parents into playing. It won't ever happen since they both think gaming is an utter waste of time/energy.

My father came to visit me a few months back and asked for me to log him into WoW so he could keep busy.
A few months have gone by, and my father is now horribly, horribly addicted to the game. I moved back in with my parents for school not long ago, and there have been nights when I've caught him playing up until 6 in the morning because he really, really wanted to finish BRD or whatever.
He doesn't have any 70s yet, but he has some 50s, 40s, 30s...tons and tons of alts all over the place everywhere. I actually find it pretty annoying, because he is always in the computer room wanting to play WoW when I'm trying to do my programming homework or something and just want to be left alone. >=( If I try to tell him he is addicted, he gets really defensive and puts it back on me "You have 2 70's, 3 60's etc etc"
Yes, dad, but I've been playing this game since release...

I'm a 50 year old mom too (well almost 50, within 5 days).
I started a troll shaman on a pvp server. Leveled till 60, and made some other chars there. But after a while I didn't liked the ganking anymore. On one server it was too bad. It was a new server where some reached 60 in few weeks and didn't have equal levels to attack, so they took very low levels. I didn't like that, and went to a pve server.
Been there since about 2 years. Have there several level 70's, a 60 and some lower levels, still leveling them.
My son plays too. Atm we are in the same guild and raid together. That was not always the case. I'm pretty addicted i must say
