Why make char names with ALT chars?

Post by Eyeball-Dragonmaw »

It is real annoying to me. You luckily can click on their name to whisper them, but otherwise I think they are missing out on a huge part of getting invites to raids, arenas, etc because no one can easily look them up on armory, on here, etc...

I know lots of people with those weird names... it sucks really bad if you have to mail them something, haha. I guess it could hurt with getting pugs groups and such, but if you do mostly guild stuff, I don't see where it really hurts, other than annoying random people, haha.

In Europe it's because a lot of those characters are common in their native languages... not such an obvious reason in the US though! I'm used to just using right-click to contact them, bit of a pain to add to friendslist etc though unless you can target them manually.

I have one of those names, because all the names I wanted were taken so I had to settle for a bootleg version of the name I wanted..

It's not really a problem though, because if someone wants to friend me, they just ask how to type the ? in my name and I simply tell them alt + 0971. :P

Exactly what I am talking about....

Be original....don't copy someone elses name.

Being fair, sometimes you are being original, it's just unfortunate that somebody else had the same bright idea :P A name I wanted for one of my characters was taken when I came to this server, luckily for me it was a name with more than one possible spelling so I took the alternative version... given that I use the same naming system across all my characters and none of the others were taken, it was a bit irritating but at least that one was actually possible to use an alternative for.

Rather annoyingly it seems the owner deleted it at some point because it now appears owned by a lvl 15 Draenei, and it was before TBC that I wanted it. Even more annoying is it means "bull" so is clearly a Tauren name

By using an already used name on a server, you aren't really copping.

Like...
You have had a nick for a long while and that's how you are known in the internet. You want to keep it that way, so, when you create your character, you name him with your usual nick... but that one is taken. What you do? Create something similar. Be it with ?, ?, ?, ?, ǿ or w/e.

There is nothing I would like more than to have an original name, but when I spend hours typing names that are taken, I have 3 options: 1 Not play the game 2. Create a name that I don't like 3. Settle for an alternate version of a name I like.

Odds are the original person that had the name doesn't even play anymore.

you can always put in a GM ticket to see if you can get the name ;)

What you mean with that? If the name got refused on the creation, doesn't it mean it's taken/break rules? Or they can do something about that?

well i know that if the account has been banned they can reissue the name to you, free of charge.

So if an account is banned, they don't automatically delete that name?

I'm also kind of scared that if I ask if my name can be changed to the original name I wanted, if that name is banned, then the GM will make me change my name even if the name I want isn't banned, since it's technically against the EULA.
