Hi all,
I just joined. Your board seems pretty cool and I gotta give props to Rollie for putting this site together.
I have this idea for a phpbb forum that caters to WOW web designers/developers/programmers. I know there's a bunch of similar sites out there like that, but the revolve around mod development. This forum would be about guild websites - a place where people can go to get help and show their sites.
The URL is: http://www.fantasyriot.com
The original idea came from this thread: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/threa ... #post18218
Please join, we'd love to have you!
Edited to clarify the message.

Rollie, yes you're correct. I edited my original post so it makes more sense.
I read your interview by the way. I'd love to be a game designer some day - once I learn either more OOP or 3D animation. For now I'm a web developer.

I am sure what I want to do - that is, what I am doing. Currently, I work as a *designer* at a web design company in Toronto. But we all know that in this day and age its not going to be the job I'll do for the rest of my life.
I was just trying to ellucidate some information from anyone who has successfully made the transition from web to video games, or perhaps simply to the web department of a game company.

Well, I was referring specifically to your desire to be a game designer, but then you present game programming and artistic fields.
I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just poking a little =)
As for wanting to be a game designer/maker/whatever, there is no reason that you can't do that right now, here today! You might not be able to make a living at it, but it can be a hobby just like anything else. Just make the proper contacts who offer strengths where you need them.
If you feel you can design good gameplay, then find a programmer and get busy! There are tons of people out there in the hobbiest/indy development segment that are looking for people who can offer skills that they don't have. Like minded folks just need to find each other, team up, and make all those cool games they have always wanted to!

Rollie, thanks for the link. I had no idea- didn't even think of that.
I understand what you're saying - I'm conflating designer and developer, roles which require two entirely different skill sets. I think I am more suited to the designer role, but I can handle programming for the web no prob.
Anyway, I'm going to check out that garagegames site.
There's some cool sites being posted at fantasyriot.com, check them out if you people need some ideas for you own guild websites.
Cheers

I am a big supporter of independant and hobby game makers. That is the only place you'll find any innovation in the market today.
There are some really great games available. And usually for around $20 to boot.
Here's one I really enjoy:

Check the demo, it's fun =)

I'll definitely check out that game. Working in front of a CPU can make it hard to play games. I gave up WOW because I couldn't strike a balance between work and casual play.
Also, I just wanted to mention that the template for my forum site is going to be redesigned.
