Upcoming changes to Census+ - BETA!

So I sat down today to do the drawing and got inspired to work on the mod a little.

I have added a new window that you can select to bring up a list of all characters that match your current view. In other words, if you want to see all level 60 unguilded priests in your local database, make those filter selections in the display and click the Show Characters button to get a list of those characters that match your list.

I have also made a change that will hopefully remove the end of processing lag if you have the census window closed when it finishes. This should lessen the impact of background census taking.

Now, I am not sure of the repercussions of loading up the amount of characters that some of you have in your local databases so I'd like for some of you folks to bang on it a little before I make a general release.

If you are interested in checking it out, you can get it here:

http://www.warcraftrealms.com/censusmod ... 3.4.1b.zip : Last updated 8/6 11:45PM CST

Don't worry, using this version will not invalidate your uploads. The internal version has not changed yet so the site will still take your data =)

Let me know what you think of the character list addition!

Ooh, I'll give that a try - my database should give it a nice hammering, considering it's not been purged since about November. I have recollections of noticing a figure around 38,000 on Alliance the other day and I know there's another 10k or so on Horde ;)

Character list sounds very nice as well - I'll have a play with that one too :)

1. 20 secs to load a database of just over 7000 characters... ;_;

2. Congrats on fixing the no lag when finishing! /cheer I can now run BWL and have Census running in the background without it bothering me :)

Still testing but so far that 20 sec loading thing is kinda the issue, since my whole game locks up for 20 seconds and I can't do a thing about it.

I love that Show Chars option, great feature. Although when clicking the race and class that you are sorting by it also locks up the game, although not for 20 seconds, but it does lock up for a few seconds....

Okay, when did the 'lock up' occur? When you first open the window? Or when you click the Show Characters button?

Opening the main window it locks up for the 20 seconds.

And also each time when I click on a Race or Class. Such as I click on Undead, it will pause, and then I click on Mage, it will pause. Clicking on Show Chars button does not cause it to pause and will open the window with the chars listed, doesn't matter how large or small the char listing will be.

Ah, okay, so it's pausing when tallying up the numbers. That's a pretty blatant pause.

I'll keep working on it.

I've got the lockup on opening the window as well (38,000 character database last time I saw it), only it takes so long with my database that I just give up and restart the game as it looks like it's not planning on unfreezing. Also still getting a little lag on the end of a census, but nothing like what it was, so that's improved anyway!

I like the character list feature - can't get the window open on my main server to try it properly but it seems to work well on the other servers I census :)

I'm scared to open up my main window... dont want to miss out on all the WoW action :)

Now if there was only a /censusplus take command or something similar then I wont have to worry about opening up the window ;)

Hmm, there's an idea - some way to open a window with all the commands, options etc, but without the info for the server you're on (so it doesn't have to load all the info before you can pause a census or whatever); make that a separate window? :)

Okay, new beta version here:

http://www.warcraftrealms.com/censusmod ... .4.1b1.zip

This one addresses the new long long lag. It was a problem with the new character listing =x

I have changed the way it works a bit. First off, the listing is now capped at 1000 characters instead of allowing a neverending list. Next up, it only calculates the listing if the window is even open.

I was getting about a 1 second pause with a local db of 7000 characters. I think that is acceptable for the moment.

I also added some other things asked for in this thread. You can now do a /census take and a /census stop. I also added a right click drop menu to the Minimap button. Just Right Click the button to do a quick Take, Pause, or Stop.

Also, I didn't mention above, but you can also right click the names in the character listing to do typical things like /whisper, /invite and such. Remember, just because they are in the list doesn't mean they are online.

Get back to me with thoughts! Please try the character list out on the bigger local dbs to let me know if it is still causing a problem there!

Thanks!

Ooh, those new features sound very good indeed, especially being able to take/pause/stop the census quickly - thanks! :)

Downloading the new version now, will try it out tomorrow :)

Takes 1-2 secs to open up the window... yay!

Has no lag when finished taking a census... yay!

Right clicking by the minimap... yay!

/censusplus commands.. yay!

I have no complaints for this updated beta version. Been working great for the last hour.

Great job Rollie!

Rollie,

I have a suggestion I may have mentioned a long long time ago. At times I want to do a /who request while the Census is running. It would be nice to have a `/censusplus who` command that prepends the /who queue with a new search. The user-defined /who will be run next, possibly pausing the census until the Who window is closed so as not to blank out the user's results. Do you think that's worth implementing?

I definately think so and I've tried to do it a couple of times but haven't come up with a solution that I liked or that worked well.

Whatever you did to the latest version worked a treat - no lag at the end of a census for me; I can't remember when that last happened! Only 4-5 seconds to open the window too (with a 39.5k character database), and the right-click menu is great too.

Thanks! :D

Definitely a really nice improvement Rollie - I've got about a 30k database as well, and this is smooth as it gets. Taking a census while raiding before was just downright dangerous due to the lag, but now I can fit it in - so I'm pretty excited about that :P Love the right click menu too :D I think the new "show chars" option is another welcome addition. Just beautiful.

Is the 1000 character cap on the Show Chars list random? Or is there some pattern to it?

Posted: Tue Aug 08, 2006 10:57 am
by Rollie
You mean the players that are displayed? It's pretty much random. It depends on the order of the characters in your local database.

- opening the window with the minimap button is very slow.

- when census is running i cant make /census who - he means "o players"
