Newbie Question : Purging Explanation, etc

Post by Ravno »

Just had several questions regarding purging and uploading.

I am a new user and noticed that my particular server has not gotten a lot of updates and wanted, if for nothing other than my own information, to start uploading and getting more accurate numbers. I looked through the boards trying to see if my questions had already been answered but came up empty. If they have already been addressed please point me in the right direction!

Since I wanted to get accurate counts on both Horde and Alliance I made a character on the Alliance side as well (normally play on Horde). If I log on and run a census on the Horde side do I need to immediately send this data or am I able to log on the Alliance side, run another census and then submit the data? Do they need to be submitted independently or can I do them at the same time?

Additionally, say I'm playing for an extended period of time and run the census once an hour through the night. So lets say I've ran the census 3 times over the course of the night playing and submit the data. Is data from all 3 submitted or only the data from the last census? (Assuming I dont purge the data in between).

Are they all 3 given different time stamps?

And finally, what are the reason to purge or not purge? I can understand purging when the character database on your computer is large, but beyond that, why wouldn't I just purge every time?

Thanks in advance, and again sorry if these have already been answered!

As long as you don't purge, all data you collect is submitted. The timestamp on each char is the last time they were 'seen'. The Activity tracking is queued so you could gather lots of data between submissions.

Purging cleans out everything and starts from scratch. Some people have reported slow downs in their UI when their database contains thousands of characters. I personally have not experienced this so I do not know if it is a factor of PC and/or how many characters (possibly 10k or more).

Honestly, with the way I have things set up now, you could take your censi daily for a week and then submit only once per week and I would still get all the data I am looking for!

Thank you for the prompt answers! Just one more point of clarification, is this true for running both Alliance and Horde? Sorry I'm not more familiar w/ the mechanics of the file you're putting the information in but it will not overwrite from one faction to the other, correct?

Nope, each realm/faction is saved separately.

I think the slow down in UI performance is linked to not just census data... but when people double that with other storage heavy UI mods like Lootlink, Echantrix, and so forth.

If I don't purge when I run a census it is choppy each time a new /who is done.
