Keep in mind when you hear bad stuff that playing in a focused beta is a very different experience from your regular gameplay, also if you're familiar with the Warhammer ip you'll know that while WoW is largely derived straight from it Warhammer is darker, no less humorous but decidedly darker (both lore and art). Just based on the ip I would say that Warhammer will likely not be everyone's cup of tea and will have a slightly higher acceptance treshold than WoW. I would personally very much like to see Warhammer come out and be good enough to draw from WoW but not quite good enough to start some kinda mass exodus, MMO's are by definition evolving entities and the best thing for us as consumers is competition
[Just look at the "PvP" zone in Wotlk, looks like DAOC/WAR to me conceptually, it may still have happened eventually but pretty sure the looming release of WAR played a part in including it
Lets hope they keep refining each others concepts so we get fun stuff to do
]
Warhammer will likely have a slightly steeper learning curve than WoW for any number of reasons, one of which being the difference between symmetric game design (WoW has exactly the same classes for horde and alliance) and asymmetric game design (daoc had 3 realms with widely different classes and warhammer may have brought the realms down to two but the careers available have a lot of variety between the various races/alignments). There are pros and cons to both approaches and I don't know which one is "best" but there is little doubt in my mind that assymetric design leads to a steeper learning curve and is less "comfortable" for people to get into, like in daoc there will be a lot of work put into polishing early gameplay, help sections and so forth to smooth this out and this is the kind of work that is done late in the development process and will end up being so important for the success of the game. The other side of the same coin is of course more varied RvR (PvP) as you're dealing with much more diverse opponents.
I honestly don't think Warhammer will reach the same polish by release as WoW but I'm hoping it'll be really close and keep getting better. There are some great concepts in WAR but you don't really know how a game will play, especially an MMO, until release. Will the gameplay be there, will it be stable (client AND server side), will it have that special thing you can't define that makes a truly great game...? I just hope it's good enough to finally give WoW some competition

Warhammer has a lot to live up to. Players coming from WoW have a higher expectation than any other game on the market.
Yes WoW's PVP system is pretty lame, but there's a lot about this game those same people love. They may not even realize it.
I think there are many things that people take for granted with WoW. The fluid feel of the characters is something other games never got right. I can't stand it when my character feels like a stick or runs with something up its rear end. I also heard that there is "lag" in WAR when you push a button. You feel like you are floating. If this is true, then no matter how good their PVP system is, people will reject this immediately.
I also like how stylized WoW looks. The stuff I've seen from Warhammer is too realistic. I don't need to see every single detail on a sword or the texture on armor. The first time you see something like that, you might think wow that's pretty cool, but subconsciously most people do not like things to be realistic like this.
We don't need another game to show how awesome their art department is. That only goes so far and many people can't play these top of the line games anyway. What we need is an MMO that can actually make a game balanced around PVP.
All and all I am not getting my hopes up. I encourage you not to as well or you might be really let down. I was really looking forward to this game a year ago, but its not looking good right now.
I'll eat my words if it does well =)

True, a good thing in the long run but without a doubt the main reason for all the delays we're seeing with WAR, AoC etc.oiseaux wrote:Warhammer has a lot to live up to. Players coming from WoW have a higher expectation than any other game on the market.
Some things I can't comment on since I'm in WAR beta but the difference in art is very much a matter of taste, WOW made everything ridiculously big in comparison to the character and we got used to that, people will get used to other styles as well if the gameplay is good. WAR will NOT be a game with graphics that are good beyond belief, the combination of wanting to be available to a large percentage of pc users and focusing on RvR (PvP) will simply force simpler graphics to avoid major lag issues.oiseaux wrote:Yes WoW's PVP system is pretty lame, but there's a lot about this game those same people love. ...and even though I can't comment on gameplay directly I want to repeat once again that we're discussing a game in beta, character animation, ui responsiveness and pretty much everything else is subject to improvement. If there were no issues to address it would have been released already

Best Buy put a release date of 9/23/08 on their site for Warhammer. It sounds like the Collector's Edition will be worth getting since you get an extra xp boost on top of everything else.
It also shows Lich King having a release date of 11/23/08 which is the #1 shopping weekend for Xmas.
With a 2 month jump on WoW I think Warhammer may steal away alot of people because by Sept people will be bored of S4, and the Sunwell content. It gives them 2 months to get people leveled up, and attached to their new toons.

Blizzard never bows to pushing out a game/expansion just to meet the Christmas rush. Missing the rush has never hurt Blizzard's game sales. That is a lesson every developer needs to learn. Rushed games = bad sales = early deaths in the case of MMOs.Eyeball-Dragonmaw wrote:Best Buy put a release date of 9/23/08 on their site for Warhammer. Warhammer is unlikely to steal away a lot of WoW's gamers. I think the majority of gamers looking at WAR will not be playing WoW at WARs launch. Warhammer will do well, and I will be there on day one no matter what, but WoW will continue to hum along just fine.
However, WoW surprised all of us originally, so WAR could do the same and the unthinkable, WoW LOSES subscribers, could happen.

I just wish I could get into the stinkin' beta, and try it out for free.
