I think it's evened the playing field and helped guilds that though they were really good adapt to different bg strategies. As an individual player, now you can be a douche and not pvp in your BG's. but in theory they are sound.
however, blizz jacked up the group q'ing, but that's a rant for tomorrow

I do miss the server based community server only BG's created, but I don't miss the queue times.
So you either get more play time or better server community. Since cross faction talk is only available offline, it hampers it even more.
Sadly, I couldn't even name you 1 person from the Alliance on my server right now.
As a whole, WoW community is a lot less involved than it was in past games (at least for me). In EQ, it was not uncommon to know just about every high level player in the game. Granted, older technology meant smaller server populations, making it easier to do, but still.
I think the whole mechanic of WoW is less conducive to community. Faster gameplay, thus creating ADD for play, and no downtime just hinders your ability to socialize much outside your inner circle in WoW.

I can't stand x-realm BGs, used to love AV and facing off against the same people. Similar to transfers, but more so for x-realm BGs this really helped to finish off server specific communities and just turned PvP into effortless farming.
The only good thing that came out of it was the reduced queues, but at, for me anyway, a horrendous cost.

I used to do lvl 29 bgs on my mage until I finally retired him with 20k+ honor. It was so fun I wanted to do it again and again. One of the things that kept me interested was the short queue times, usually less than one minute. If I had to wait say 30 minutes I would probably lose interest and find something else to do. Although Arthas is a descent sized server so I guess it wouldn't have taken too long but still, the longer I have to wait the more time is wasted.
I never had the chance to play bgs when each server had their own bg, but I like the idea of playing with different people more than same people because then there will be more variety in the gameplay and not the same predictable outcome every time. At the same time, I saw a lot of the same people that I had played with in previous games. I liked making friends with people in other realms that I just saw in bgs, it's always nice to have people you can count on.
With that said, I think high pop servers should have 1 server bgs during peak hours or give people the option of queuing only with people in their server if they don't mind waiting an hour and maybe show how many people are queued for that bg, so that people who do mind waiting might join their servers bg if they see it's almost full.

When there is no chance of winning there is nothing to lose.

Most of the well known alliance players on Mal'Ganis are known to the horde, but it's because they are world gankers and not because of bgs anymore. It's pretty much the same, although at least in bgs you were all about the pvp as opposed to the warzone that is Quel'Danas every day, haha. Ah... world pvp is dead, but world ganking and general douchebaggery is alive and well
