How to choose realm - New player, PVE, Horde

Very late to the game, but am a recently laid off attorney and want to start playing Wow (did a trial period a couple of years ago and enjoyed it but wasn't a great time to get started). I know I want to play Horde on a PvE realm. I anticipate playing some during the day but also standard evening hours. I'm currently unemployed but do devote a fair amount of time to looking for a job, as well as other hobbies and interests. So I don't plan on this taking over my life but I could be playing anywhere from 0 to 3 or 4 hours a day. I'd like to eventually get to the end-game content but I'm in no hurry. I don't mind soloing quite a bit but would like to do some PUGs too for the social aspects and to learn how to play my class in a group setting so that I can eventually join a casual raiding guild.

In light of the above, any suggestions for general traits to look for in a realm? High vs. medium activity, Horde vs. Alliance ratio, etc. I'd sure appreciate any suggestions for finding a good realm to get started on. I don't really have friends who are playing right now so that's not a good option for me.

I'm a newbie too, also playing PvE Horde. I'm in Garona and like it well enough. Not too crowded, not too crazy, but not barren or boring either. Its a medium census, I believe. Check it out and maybe I'll see you out there.
