Realm Splits and Transfers

Realm Splits
If I remember correctly, we don't have any way of knowing where a player goes if they transfer, correct?
Do we think that there is going to be an easier way to tell with realm splits, since ideally, it's 2 "new" servers from one old one?
Is there any way that there can be a link or merge type feature? For example, say Malygos gets split. I'd really like for my history to still be attached to Helene. So, say, I claim Helene on the new server (since I assume that she's going to be listed as a separate character). I thenk can link original Helene to new Helene, and the old ID now points to the new ID, which is merged together.
Too much database work? I'd think that it would only take a one time effort as far as the database is concerned, since you'd only have to merge when the request was made...
Obviously this would only affect those who have accounts here and claim their characters.
Thoughts?
