I think that's the idea for now. The data on most servers is still kind of skewed because of it, although now that most people have gotten a chance to try it out I imagine the numbers are becoming more accurate.

Although, it's also possible that Rollie just hasn't gotten around to it yet

When you get round to deathknights add the blood elfs and draenei to the quick race stats too

I'm anxious to see the DK numbers. Everyone says that Dwarf DKs are the most rare, and I want to see if that's really the case

From my scans on Whisperwind alliance (pretty typical alliance server), dwarves are indeed the rarest of death knights... which is why I made one! Plus, dwarf sprinting in acherus just looks hilarious.

Dwarf (42,829) is the lowest alliance and Troll (36,634) is lowest over all. Now what I find funny is all the gnome (74,463) DKs. They look so silly it is not even funny but guess it people like them for racial talents.

Now I play the Orc (127,707, 4th lowest) for all of its racial bonus talents. And they make armor look dang nice. As you can guess I use axes mostly with my DK.

Yeah, overall trolls aren't played much at all... mostly the only ones I see around are hunters these days. Even their slight racial boost wasn't enough, I guess.

Gnome DKs look very goofy... and very not scary. I wish I saw less of them around, to be honest

My horde DK on mal'ganis is orc as well, pretty much for the reasons you listed. The reason my ally DK is dwarf is pretty much solely because there are barely any... and playing the rarely played combinations can be fun. It may not be the best for min/maxing, but there's more to the game than just numbers
