New Census Criteria.

Post by Vas »

Through contact with friends on other WoW servers, I have learned that my particular server, be it because of a lower population or whatever, is one of the higher priced when it comes to purchasing things from other players or the auction house.

I thought it would be helpful to enter census materials, much like an item information collector mod, that each time a player visits the auction house, they can choose to run a mod that searches all existing items and records their prices. This information, in turn, would be uploaded much like the current population census info and players could learn where their server ranks as far as how much they are being overcharged or undercharged for a particular item that has been seen across other realms.

Any criticism is welcome. It's just an idea, so don't get ridiculous.

Thanks and good luck.

There is actually such a project in the works right now. Check out www.wowecon.com for more details. I don't know much about it so let me know if you find out any good info!

WoWEcon.

Post by Vas »

This is a great tool and has already been real helpful in the choice sI've been making when it comes to buying and selling things I need or don't need in the game. Unfortunately, it seems that the prices in the system are already set.

It doesn't seem to be an information gathering mod, but more of a reference tool from information already gathered.

Actually it does gather information from the email you receive from the AH when you do transactions. I would guess they are trying to keep the prices to what things really sell for rather than auctioneer that tends to get duped when people put up insane prices on a bunch of auctions.

I did look deeper into WoWEcon and it seems I was mistaken. As posted above, this Mod does gather information in a couple of very different methods than what I've seen or been considering for my own economy Mod.

In a lot of instances, while using WoWEcon, I've come across some interesting differences in the prices provided by the mod in comparison to those listed in the auction house on my server. Most of the time, the situation is the price in the auction house is a lot higher than the one stored within the mod.

A few friends of mine and I have been working on this issue and trying to decipher the best way to look for such drastic differences in prices, that way a price mod could be the decisive aspect in someone choosing to purchase a particular item that might be priced 20 to 30% higher than what it should sell for.

Of course, no matter what, if someone needs a stack of Mageweave Cloth and it's priced at 3gold in the AH, they're probably going to buy it before checking the Trade channel for alternatives.

Unfortunately, one of the only methods of correcting this issue would be following the example of a couple players on the Ellune server and buying out all of the trade goods in AH and then reselling them to remove the initial, marginal differences.

This is probably a lot deeper than most people want to think when they download and install a mod for WoW, but if Blizzard is really so concerned with an economy in the game, it would make sense to employ a supply and demand, even in the NPCs. This would change currency to something "solid" instead of its current, ethereal state.

I have to say, I am sooooo happy to have found this thread and this information. I have spent hours searching for Aution House economy stats with no luck. So far, this(http://www.wowecon.com) doesn't exactly have what I am looking for, but I may have missed it. From what I can tell, this gives the price data in-game in a tooltip only. I'd like to see it in the wonerful format that this site has its census data in. It would be nice to search and browse various servers an and use serach filters like (this site has) horde vs. alliance (and a separate for Gadgetzan as well), PvP vs. PvE vs. RP, population, etc...

This info. would be nice for many reasons. It would be interesting to track the economic trends over server types, population, etc. It would be useful in choosing a new server just like this site is for class/race/pop/etc. For example, if you have narrowed your new server down to three choices, and you knew that you were going to do skinning as a profession, you could pick the server with the best prices. Or, if you wanted to pick a production profession like blacksmithing, but not a complimentary gathering profession like mining, you could look for a server with cheap mats. Hell, just for curiousity's sake, it'd be worth it.

I know that some people would be worried that this would be harmful to the WOW economy, but I think that it would help balance it out a whole lot. Consider this, Player A is looking to sell herbs as your moneymaker, and picks a server with high herb prices to take advantage of the market. Well, chances are, Players B-Z may have the same idea and pick that server too. Well, soon the prices go down and supply increases. This would result in less herbalism people going into that server (because of the price drop) and more alchemy/non-herbalism people going there becuase of the same reason. Thus, in the end, the up/down flux of the fluid AH economy would have far less ultra-high or ultra-low spikes, hence, balance.

I know that most people who read this don't need me to spell it out for them, but I like to back up my ideas. Anywho, I realize that this may not be the most appropriate website forum to post this in, since the topic was here, and people have interest in it, it works. As stated before, http://www.wowecon.com doesn't seem to provide the information in a web-based database like this lovely site does. My suggestion is that WarcraftRealms team up with WOWEcon to do this. If, they (WOWEcon) could provide you (WarcraftRealms) the raw data, could you make all the wonderful browse/quick stat/search/data-filters/graphs/etc. for the AH information? Or perhaps Vas and his friend to do this.

If either of you (WarcraftRealms or Vas) or WOWEcon decides to do this, I' be more than happy to help in any way I could. Thank you for your time.

This type of info does intrigue me. I'll do some thinking, see what would be feasible and possibly even contact the guy over at wowecon to see if he'd be interested in some sort of cooperation.

Wow, I am surprised by the quick response. I am grateful for your time and interest in the matter. I realize that you are likely swamped with keeping this site and the mods current and bug free, so I don't expect you magically make it happen instantly. But I am thankful that you are considering adding it to your current load of work.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I am not a programer or web-developer, but if you can think of a way for me to help, I would be happy to help. Thanks again for your timely response!

The biggest thing something like this would need is users. And to cover most items across all servers (and even factions) will require a lot more people contributing that what I currently have coming in for Census updates. I could be wrong of course, but I would think that it would take quite a few folks to cover (and keep updated prices) items across the game world. I'm toying with the idea though, could be fun =)

Very cool. It would be very nice if an automated search of the AH could be run using a script. I don't know if that is possible or if the WOWEcon method of completed auctions is better, but either way, it's a really cool idea.

Thank you again for all you do here, and again let me know how I can help (beyond running the mod that is).
