How to use the addon

Post by pitman44 »

I just installed the census addon and ran it on my main server today. Once each on horde and alliance. Also uploaded once after I ran it on both sides.

Is that all you need to do?

Are the prune and purge buttons ever used?

How often should I grab a census on my server?

Once I start it, will it run if I close the window or does it need to stay open?

Just some questions I had after reading the FAQ and running the addon.

Thanks

Hello and welcome! :)

Basically, yes. Your first submission has also already been successfully processed. Congratulations! :D Naturally, you are welcome to collect data on more than one realm, but that's not a requirement. Even data on just one faction is valuable, especially as many realms are very poorly covered, because there simply aren't enough Census users about.

The prune and purge buttons are used more often by those who run a LOT of censuses as the manual upload has maximum file size of 10 MB. Which can be hit in under 2 days, if someone is pushing really hard and there are no problems with Battle.net / WoW. At the moment, I need a purge about once every 6 days. And nothing prevents you from purging often, if you like to keep the .lua file small, which does speed up the upload a bit. :D

As often as you like. :D However, you are adviced not to upload more than once within a 15 minute period, as the system might otherwise overwrite your earlier submission.

The window can be closed and there are options for pretty much automatic operation in the options menu (in the upper right corner of the window). I prefer to operate manually, but that's just my personal preference, mostly due to the fact that I like occasional PvP and the addon gets disrupted by entering a BG, if not paused.

Also, if you don't mind the spam, you can turn on the verbose mode to see what the addon is currently working on...

I hope these answers helped and if you have more questions, ask away! :) In any case, happy censusing! :D Oh, and Happy New Year too! :D

Hello Anguses and welcome aboard the WCR crew. :)

The Censusplus window doesn't have to be open and since it takes a lot of screen space, people generally keep it closed unless they using it to make changes or are looking at the gathered data on the current faction.

If you tick both the auto-start and auto-census buttons on the options list, Censusplus will run in the background with no input required from you.

As I said in my earlier post, I just prefer the manual operation. But it's just my personal preference, as is the fact that I also do my uploads manually while others rely on the UniUploader.

Also, if you have any further questions, please ask. English is technically a trinary or tertiary language for me, so I occasionally manage to be unclear despite a fairly wide vocabulary and extended use experience (almost 30 years). :D
