Suggestions to simply and make more effecient data collect.

Post by kipp »

IMHO, I think it would be much nicer if the data was auto uploaded with its own simple upload utility.... yes I know about the uniupload thing. I've already installed it and it apears to have uploaded but I don't like it very much. Its way to complicated. I simple uploader without all the other features would be much better. I just want my data uploaded with credit going to my wowcensus account. Maybe a simplier uploader with the ui mod bundled that can install both with one installer?

Also, i filled in the Upload Access username and password on the uniuploader and after uploading went to my wowcensus account and it did not show I had made any upload on my account. I then tried to upload my data via the website and that showed my uploaded data on the website.

Last thing, i was sad to not see my uploaded content immediatly. Is that not automated? Maybe its just on a timer and will still parse soon.

Hello and welocme!

I'll let Rollie (the site admin) comment on the upload matter when he has time to do so and answer your last question. Queue processing is automated and usually functions at 8 hour intervals. However, last week, there was a major problem and the upload queue currently has a massive backlog. It actually exceeded 6 days, 4 hours for a while and is currently down to about 5 days, one hour.

Just be patient, your upload will be processed in due time and things should get back to normal in a few days. (Last time there was a major problem, the catch up lasted 4+ days, if I recall correctly.)

kipp, not too many people like addons that take it upon themselves to transmit data.

1974ER and Hybuir already answered most points, but regarding the problem with not getting credit when using UniUploader, have you tried the suggestions I made in this thread: http://www.warcraftrealms.com/forum/vie ... php?t=4591 ? It seems UniUploader by default enables some settings which just plain break its interactions with WarcraftRealms, so you have to disable those for it to work correctly - not very intuitive, which is why I made that guide thread to help people new to it!

I don't think the utility must take it upon itself to transmit data. You're right about that but very many programs give you the option to enable automatic uploads. For example, the wowhead client has that option which I have enabled. I've got programs going online all the time for data. Programs checking for updates, antivirus definitions, etc.

Thanks for the thread about the upload credit issue. I'm on the road but will look at it as soon as I get home.

I am using the wowhead addon to submit data to there database and its doing exactly what I am trying to describe. I'd like to suggest you check it out to see what I mean. Its real simple and real nice. I believe it would incourage more to assist this site and database if it was this simple.

Maybe I'm in the minority and maybe this has been asked before but why not add a button to the mod where you can click it to upload data? That way it would be an option or people could do it via website. I know for myself, I have tried to collect data several times in the past and it was a pain to log to the website to upload data. I think part of that is because I rarely visit this site unless I am specifically looking for information on a realm. However, I would be more than happy to run the addon and just click "upload" once a day or session.

One click uploads are what the UniUploader program is for. Instructions for it are on the manual upload screen.

I doubt you will ever see a way to upload from within the game, for several reasons. One, it may not even be possible, because it's doing something inside the game that causes an independent action outside the game. Two, even if it is possible, it probably violates some arcane Blizzard ToS rule. And Three, many people would be leery of anything that allows executable access to their computer from inside a game.

What Pennet said. My understanding is it's not possible anyway, since Blizz don't allow mods to interact with external programs whilst ingame (it'd be opening the door for even more bots if it was possible for such interaction) - even the Wowhead uploader is a separate program which has to be used after logging out of the game to save the savedvariables file.

I agree it'd be nice to have a simple one-click upload system but UniUploader does fill that role if you're willing to spend a few minutes setting it up (sadly you do have to check out the info posted in the General section of this forum since the default settings don't work with WCR nowadays, so yes I agree it's not the most simple and intuitive system, but once it's set up it does work).

In any case it'd have to be an optional extra, not packaged in with the addon, or many people wouldn't trust it and wouldn't use Censusplus at all, which would be counterproductive - heck, I wouldn't use an included .exe if I hadn't been part of this community for years and know fine that Rollie is not at all likely to do anything malicious with any coding - the average person would be extremely wise to not trust any such external uploader .exe that wasn't already known (UniUploader has a longterm reputation as I understand it so is as "safe" as anyone can hope for)
