Suddenly chars will disappear from one server and appear on another. As far as I know, there is no way to figure out when a server loses folks and when one gains them via this process.
Any plans or ideas on this effect or do you think it'll just balance out over time as "prune" cleans things up and what not?
what effect will transfers have on census info?

Coming from a home server that has had a TON of incoming transfers (albeit the opposite faction from mine, although mine has gotten some too), I think it'll probably just balance out.
Maybe Rollie has a way to track, but at this point there will be no way to really tell someone's history unless you know what server they migrated from... a definite bonus for ninjas
I know my guild requires some kind of guild history (on this server or even other servers, due to past history with a ninja), but I bet there will be guilds screwed over by ninjas who transferred servers where no one knows about their reputation. At least transfers can only be done every 6 months on the same character, so people can't just server hop.

Yeah, it is possible for server transfers to be counted towards populations on both servers for 30 days after the transfer. Then once those 30 days have past, they will drop off from their old server and only be counted on the new one.
I had debated putting in some auto checks for migrations, but with the paid transfers now available to many realms, it makes that pretty much impossible.
It is too bad that names are not unique across all servers, but then again, with 30 million characters, unique names would have long since become hard to come by =)

Bringing a thread back from the dead.... well not so dead just about 20days old... =)
Anyway, the way I see it, it would be quite hard to do. Because if you have a character on a realm in which you played once, but deleted, and then along comes a character transfer (same race and class) and the person has the name of your character you deleted, or they had to switch names because their original one was taken; Census will currently add data to that existing profile. So the data itself will be messed up.
I'm not sure what checks are in place for a situation where you made a char to lvl 60, and deleted it (you just wasted alot of time leveling btw), then along comes a lvl 50 char. What happens in this case? New profile or a messed up existing profile?
I do know that if a char is deleted and another one is created of the same name, but a difference race and/or class, a completly new profile is made.
But the checks which needs to be in placed for the situation I described first, that would be quite hard to do. Because suppose you were lvl 50, and stopped playing completely, then all of a sudden you decide to play that char again months later and level it up to 60 in a matter of days. And lets say your not running Census at all, and your realm is one of the lowest in Census data, you may get away from all Census collectors and then all of a sudden when you hit 60 show up in your profile as having to go from 50-60 skipping all levels in between.
This type of situation can also come up when a transfer happens as well. You deleted the char at 50, and all of a sudden a level 60 comes along via a transfer. The data gets added to the existing profile because it appears to be the same..
If a check was in place for time. Say you haven't played that char for months, then you pick it up and your scanned at being 51, I think Census should still add this to the existing profile no matter how old it is. Since there is currently no way to determine if that person was a transfer....
If there was only some way to do more tracking......

Yeah, it is problematic when you have the same name, race and class. I have worked on putting in a level check in place to see if a the character is a lower level, but it adds a fair amount of overhead to the update process.
Scenario #2 where a lvl 50 is deleted and then a lvl 60 transfers on is pretty much impossible to catch though.
