I was at work and I had upgraded my account, and hoping to get some xp by killing in Azeroth, but I couln't validate the version...

It's a known issue that you cannot log in without having both the account "flagged" and the CDs installed. Even if your char is in IF or someplace in the original game, you MUST have the CDs installed to login if your account is BC enabled.
This came as an unpleasant surprise to military people overseas that had spouses send them the keys via e-mail, only to learn they were then unable to play until the CDs were mailed over, which apparently can take close to a month.
