Best realm to start at

Post by TheChosen »

Hello

I recently decided to start playing wow and started on the server Stonemaul , after few hours I noticed the server was primarily played by russian speaking people. No offence to russians but playing an online game where you don't understand most of the people around you is not ideal to say the least.

I would like to ask for some first hand experience of a server that is best for a completely new player (not new to mmorpg though). I intend to play at a PvP server and mainly PvP.

Few criteria:

a) Balanced Population
b) Not too many l33t PvP players, more casual
c) English Speaking EU server

I'm not sure about EU servers, but on every US PvP server you have the people with the huge epeens that think they're pretty leet. Usually it's best just to ignore them :P

Maybe Balgair can help you with a good EU server choice ;)

a) Balanced population? What is that?
b) It's a well known fact that wow is overcrowded with many players with huge epeens.
c) Skullcrusher has alot of different nations represented lots of dutch, swedish, danish and norwegen play there.

Balanced population = at least horde vs alliance in the range of 45-55% on one side or the other. I don't want to play on a server where one of the sides has 75% of the population.

I don't mind the different nations.. as long as they speak english.

A friend of mine suggested this one is good for playing with the alliance.. are you sure its good? The numbers suggest 20:80 ratio.. I intend to play with horde though.

I play horde on Skullcrusher, as a Horde and the only real problems I had where noobs begging me for money. Afaik Ravens and Legion Inc (the one I'm in) are the 2 best guilds for casual players on the server (Horde side). Alot in wow stands and fails with the people you play with. Now with TBC guilds easely accept new members cause of everyone started leveling again, so if you wanne start playing somewhere now is the right moment :). Afaik my guild accepts new members aswell atm, we raid once in a while and have alot of people that have kids in the guild, http://legion-inc.co.nr/ (If the board says that we don't accept new members ignore it every good application stands a good change of still getting in.).

Wyril: whats the ratio Horde vs Alliance? Is it really 80 vs 20 % as stated above?

What I've seen in outlands lately it's somewhere between 50/50 and 60/40 (alliance/horde).

Firetree has a good population for both factions...I believe Alliance is slightly more populated than horde. The server is listed for US with timezone in EST, but there are many like myself who are located MST or PST. I also know of a good number who are based in Australia.

Can't really help much with PVP servers as I'm a PVE person myself but looking at that link to Skullcrusher, no, it won't be that ratio - there's been very few submissions for Alliance on that server, so a lot of players on Alliance side won't have been picked up by censuses.

I did some research and found Frostmane (the EU one).. Any experience with it? It looks promising with decent ratio.

No idea about that server, sorry, but here's a small tip for you.
You may want to check it's a fairly new server though, especially if this is your first character. Finding groups for low level instances/quests on an old server is not just impossible, but downright painful. Sure, you could always skip all elite quests and instances... :|

Right now, it's painful. I doubt it will be that later, when more and more are bringing alts up again.

In any case, not until level 60+ is dungeon crawling an effective leveling tool. Sure, you miss a little lore if it's your first time, but that shouldn't be a problem with an alt. :)

I used to think so, but really alts who have high level friends get boosted through if they want to bother, and anyway people on my server can't seem to use the new LFG tool, not even for the hugely popular Outland instances, let alone the old ones.

Not just the lore. You learn to play in a group during those easier instances, you learn the meaning of 'pull', 'aggro', 'tank'... sure the Outland 5 mans are mostly easyish, but can get quite painful too if somebody behaves like we used to (and sometimes got away with) in the old days of BFD or SFK ^^

The first days, I tried conducting a promotional campaign in general channels... some of the replies I got made me really despair on human nature :|

Hey, I was in a raid that downed a couple of bosses in Naxx (we didn't clear all AQ40 though), have been playing from March 2005, and had a young server at my leisure back when the game itself was young in Europe. That's why I'm a bit concerned about today's new players... I know what they're missing :P

I have found THE best server for you!
Naxxramas

a) Balanced Population
There are only 150 more Allies as Horde

b) Not too many l33t PvP players, more casual
Chances are pretty small.

c) English Speaking EU server
Think so :)
