How often to Purge?

Post by Amyn »

Forgive the 'noob' question, I did read the FAQ but couldn't find the answer needed.
How often should I purge my logs? Is it better to keep the log and retake the census, or is it better to purge and take a new census, or will it even make a difference? If it is better to keep the logs accumulating data, is there even any point to 'purge' if I remain on my present server?
Any other points or suggestions to improve my data collection is appreciated.

Doing a PURGE will remove all data from your file. I would suggest Pruning every couple of weeks though as that will remove older data from your local data.

I very rarely purge, I usually just prune to keep the data up to date.

same here. I prune now and then. I only do a /serverpurge to clear out all other data when I have scanned much other realms.

Prune doesn't do a lot for me, as my census file grows to an insane size well before 30 days are up. I usually purge every two weeks or so.

So here's a suggestion for Rollie - add a Prune option to pick how many days back to delete, rather than fixing it at 30... :D

Any data over 30 days is not counted in many statistics here. It will update the profile if necessary but otherwise its not counted at all.

Tartara, you can manually prune for any number of days already.

/censusplus prune X - where X is the amount of days back you want to prune for. I usually do 15 myself :P

Maybe just an idea. Tell people how full their SV file is. (Take a look at how Auctioneer is doing that (I use Auctioneer as an example since 1) I see that it is the only other addon I have with a bigger SV-file ;-), 2) they have something in place for showing the people how full the SV-file is and 3) since I'm also active on the support-forum/wiki-pages for Auctioneer ))
People can than - after looking how full their SV-file is - decide to prune or even purge the file.

Btw. there is no problem until you hit something as a SV-file size of 12MB. After that the data just is not stored anymore.

Well, I know the 12MB is not a hard and fast rule as I've seen people upload 20MB files here before =x

Isn't it? No it is not... It is the number of variables (I believe) that has a limit in Lua (Need to reread the issues about it on Norganna's forums to see what the exact cause of the limit-problem with Lua is, I see).
Anyhow for Auctioneer it hits that border at about 12MB files.

I thought that the purge/prune rule you introduced was for the same issue. But if it is not, forgot I mentioned it (ok put it to the back of your head, incase you somehow hit that border I was talking about ;) )
