Census Stats!

Post by Hybuir »

Forgive me... I had to put something into spreadsheets at work so that I could seem productive; so I plugged in server stats.

Basically I saw unbalanced servers. Like 3,000 Alliance and 600 Horde. I was baffled, usually they're 1.2:1 or something, not 5:1. I was trying to sort the ones that were way offbalance but couldn't figure a way, the ratios were activity ratios. UGH.

So off I went and devised on just taking census population numbers and devising some sort of indicator by doign (Alliance/Horde)+(Horde/Alliance). In a theoretical world all servs would be 1:1 so the indicators would be the almighty 2. So if they're UNbalanced like in the previous example, the Hybuir server would have an indicator of (3000/600)+(600/3000)=5.2

The indicator also has a dual purpose for number crunching censusers, if it has a GIGANTIC indicator like 20,000A 500H (indicator of 40.025) then there is a good chance of coming up on quite a number of new/updates for this server.

Without further ado, here are the numbers:

As much as I really like this site and its addon, I have to say 90% of the stats for the world realms is just way off because of the lack of people posting results. For example Scilla's alliance was at 1785 or something when I started scanning about 5-6 days ago I think. Now the after 5-6 days the alliance shows as 4800 which has bumped Scilla which is a low pop server to almost the middle of the pack character wise.

I'd like to see a big push to get people to run it so we get a much more real idea of the current shape of the servers. Maybe even set it up like a "job posting" have a list of servers and a horde column and a alliance column and have people more or less sign up saying they will cover their server and faction side.

Maybe make a universal forum post and goto each realm, ontop of that maybe some sort of section where these people can "tick" off when they've done it, so you know when someone might need to be replaced from being inactive.

Having all the servers and factions to atleast double yellow on the amount reported column would give everyone a real solid idea of what servers need help or not.

many of the regular contributors here update for two or more servers (or in Balgair's case, like half the EU servers.) It would be nice to get more people involved, but I've found the blizzard forums to be mostly useless for this. Usually all that happens is the thread turns into a debate on the general value of the statistics on this site, and the original point is lost.

I wish there was an easier way to collect the data, but Blizzard hasn't offered to help in any way. They'd rather just spout off about the supposed inaccuracy of these type of sites... honestly, I don't think they really want people to have evidence of how bad the imbalance is on some servers. Then they'd have even more people whining about it :P

well really, doing it is a benefit no matter what however, even if you get 5-6 or even less then that posting results that were not before.

Another idea what about getting together 4-8 people or even however many you can and each person goes to the bottom servers and starts scanning, stay on that server for say a week scanning then everyone moves to the next group.

I'd gladly help in such a operation.

I know in my old account I reached the maximum amount of characters by just toggling through a bunch of needed servers via my roomate while i was at work (and she'd watch movies). It does tend to get harder to census when you have just a couple of toons you want to gear but you can't usually spare the time.

All in all we have a group of knowlegable players but just dont have the coverage that we'd like.

It's very very hard to get the coverage - I have two accounts full of census alts and still can't get the EU servers even close to accurate; there's just so many that are low on entries. US is a bit better that way, as most of the more active people here are on US servers so there's more people to help the low census realms, but EU people just do not seem interested, sadly.

I'm really not saying anyone isn't doing a good job honestly, I'm just saying if we/the site advirtised more on the wow forums we'd likely get afew people to do it every time its posted.

whoever is in charge why not make a generic forum post, explaining what the site does and links to download the census and maybe even something about the draws. Those of us who are already here and are dedicated can each copy it and post it in various realm forums. I know I'd gladly do it and I'm sure someone who has 2 full accounts of scanners wouldn't mind more people joining to do it so he doesn't have to as much.

I've actually had decent luck asking for help on the general forums, I just haven't done it in forever. Yes, you'll usually get the debate on the validity of the site and what not, but you'll usually get a couple of folks who do tend to help out.

You might also drop hints about the drawings and the chance at prizes for potential incentives for submitting data!

Let's write up a good form letter that we can post on some of the server forums to try to generate some buzz about submitting data!

Would be a good idea to have a form letter; I'd happily post it on some of my census alts to the servers they're on, at least so long as the Blizz forum admins don't take it as spam - I'd rather not risk a forum ban or anything!

Something I thought of when looking at Hyb's other stats thread (the total submissions) is perhaps wording it in a way to make a kind of friendly competition between servers as to which can be best represented on censuses... if you can add those stats to the site it could be nice to point people at it and say "hey, want to get your server higher up this list?" I certainly know I upped my own censusing on Draenor to get it into the 1k submissions bracket after I worked out the EU submissions totals and it may well encourage some others to do the same.

How about the general drawing info?
In appreciation for all the wonderful contributors and supporters to WarcraftRealms.com, each month we will be running a User Appreciation Contest. Prizes can range from all sorts of things from $25 Amazon gift certificates to Applie iPods to Sony Playstation Portables to $250 Amazon gift certs!

Participation is simple! Just use the Census+ UI mod to collect Census snapshots and then upload them to WarcraftRealms.com. For every 1000 updates your submissions are responsible for, you will be assigned a ticket. At the end of the month, a raffle will be held with the user assigned the winning tickets getting the prize!

Don't know what the Census+ UI Mod is or how to use it or what to do next? Check the FAQ! http://www.warcraftrealms.com/censusfaq.php

Don't miss out on your chance to not only help keep WarcraftRealms.com data current and up to date, but also get entered to cool free stuff!

Posting that would likely get it flagged as spam. It would need to be more along the lines of :
Hey folks! I noticed that SERVERXXX is vastly under represented on WarcraftRealms.com. Would anyone be willing to help cover the server better? All it takes is using the CensusPlus UI mod and submitting data! Not only that, but you get entered to win drawings as well!
Anyway, something along those lines

It helps if your actually a player on the realm too... I would see someone who plays on another realm and posts on another realms forums will cause it to be reported.
