How much money should I have in my pocket?

Post by eiresurg »

Is there any general guide or recommendations as to how much money you should aim to have in your pocket for each level? My character is a lvl 31 dwarf warrior. I think I have about 5 gold plus a bunch of bronze, copper and silver bars. Should I be aiming for much more than that, or am I on par with other characters of similar lvl? Obviously, more is better, but I don't want to waste time mining and blacksmithing just to build by wallet if it's not necessary. However, I don't want to get to lvl 60 and discover that I should have spent more time accumulating funds along the way and have to spend day after day mining in my later levels because I didn't do enough early on. Any recommendations or references would be greatly appreaciated.

Money is a nice thing to have but I haven't ever been in a situation where I've HAD to buy something. I think I had maybe 2 gold at your level but then I did what I normally do in MMO's which is to start trading my ass off. Now I'm lvl 43 and have 170 gold :P

But yeah, in a nutshell, don't worry about money yet.

Hello!

Well, if you have not yet bought riding skill and animal... then 5 G is very, very little. However, all is not lost. :D

Mining can earn you gold quickly. It naturally depends heavily on server, but a stack of 20 copper ore can go out for 10+, sometimes even 20+ G. Take a look at the AH (Auction House). Also, sometimes ores sell better than bars, because jewelcrafters like to prospect ores.

I'm not familiar with a guide to specific amounts for levels... but, so that you have some frame of reference: Better riding skill and better mounts will cost you 500+ G around level 60, and later you can expect to shell out several thousand Gs for things like riding flying mounts, cold weather flying, and so on... And then there are luxuries... Like a mammoth that costs 20 000 G! :D

Generally speaking, it is easier to make more money when you are of higher level. For a level 1, one gold is a fortune, for a level 80... pocket change. :D

I always used gathering skills to make money. I haven't played since BC, but at the time Skinning, and Mining made me a fortune. Of course alot of that comes to a screeching halt once you stop leveling, and hit top rank unless you like mindless farming for hours every week.

My biggest success started when I was Level 70, and down to 10g. I thought for sure I was going to have to buy gold because I didn't want to farm mats, or do daily quests. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I decided to download the Auctioneer add-on, and try my luck at buying and selling.

At first it was a little rough because I didn't personally know prices very well, and my auction data was minimal since I just downloaded auctioneer, but as the months progressed I made thousands of gold every day. I was so happy I finally figured out a way to make money.

It was so easy too. I just scanned the whole auction house which normally would take 15-30 mins. It would update all the prices, averages, highs, lows of every item. After the completion it would than automatically show me every item I could make a profit on.

The Auctioneer program is awesome. You can adjust the price range of items to buy/sell, rarity, profit %, etc. It is impossible to fail at making money by the truckload.

Of course the last 6 months I played the game I never left the city. I was either at the mailbox collecting my money, or scanning the auction house.

I had so much gold I ended up selling it to companies every day who would than resell it on their sites. My best day I made just under 31k gold. This was just one server. I thought about quitting my job, and doing it full time, but it got boring.....matter of fact waaaaaay boring.

I have some goal in the game by some key levels and 98% of the time over these numbers.

lvl 35 target is 50g to 75g. The buy a regular speed land mount.
lvl 60 target is 100g to 400g This time you are after an epic speed land mount
lvl 70 target is only 250g now get your regular speed mount.
Now you are in the home big money making levels... And you will need it. Buy lvl 78 goal is to get at least 3000g yes thousand and by lvl 80 you want to hit 5000g to 7000g. You epic flying mount is around 5000g.

How do you make all this gold.
Well sell cloth (on an server 1 to 2 years old linen alone is worth 30s to 70s per stack)
Selling normal quality ore (I normally save silver other rare ores till sure do not need them.. silver sells for 80s to 2 gold per bar)
Selling herbs or needed potions needed for other crafters.

Now this is easy if you start at lvl 1. But will say DK makes things harder since you start at lvl 55. Only good news is you have a epic speed land mount so save so gold on that. And the DK flying mount can fly and normal and epic speeds. You only need to get the license for them.

Like I have 3 lvl 80s on one server (DK, Hunter and Mage). When they hit 80 mage had 9100g, hunter 7000g and DK only 3000g. Mage make extra money porting people around. You can get 5g to 20g tips for porting to the 2 key city hubs (BC and WotLK) If smart can port 2 to 5 people at a time and you are looking at 25g to 100g.

Whoah! Really? I've been cashing my bars in at vendors, assuming there are plenty of miners out there and never thought to sell at the AH. That was stupid!!! I'll get right on that. I've got several stacks of 20 copper in my bank. . .

Even if you don't use an auction add-on like Auctioneer, you can make money. Just search the AH before putting up something, to see what others are (trying to) sell the same thing for, and price yours accordingly.

Long before I started using Auctioneer, I was making money by selling green drops that I didn't or couldn't wear, as well as gathering & production skill materials. I'm still working on getting enough gold for my epic flying mount, but I always had enough gold as I went for my regular & epic ground mounts, and my regular flying mount, not to mention all of the training along the way.

And if you want a auction addon that will not stress you system like auctioneer look at auctionmaster. It is what auctioneer was in the beginning. But with any addon like this learn it before taking big chances. You can lose a ton of money if buy items are that are not movers. I remember losing 500g from an items that was just not moving after buying it. But others that watched the trends for 1 month now make 1000s of gold per month buying and selling.

You can tell this is something enjoyed about Eve-Online. They can make close to one trillion+ ISK a month if you play the market right.

BTW 1 trillion ISK is about 10,000 gold in wow.
