11M updates and other thoughts...

Post by 1974ER »

Well, ladies and gentlemen of the boards...

It's time for yet another barrier to break. As we speak, the site has finished processing the submission that will put me above 11 million updates after all parts of site update themselves again. :D

On other news, possibly even before the month ends, we are apparently going to see one of the "old timers", namely Djambo or Hybuir drop out of the all time top 10 new ones as Lohan75 is only about 31 000 entries away from current number 10 spot value.and has been able exceed 5000 daily entries multiple times.

Happy further censusing to all!

Wishes,
the Epic Censi

8th and 10th for now, the lists just got readjusted a bit and the competition for the last spots on updates list is apparently fierce again. In fact, on purely theoretical level, only I, Lohan75 and bringoutyourdead can be sure that we are not knocked off the monthly top 10 updates list this month... same actually applies to new ones monthly list.

But knowing how thing tend to go, I would say that though order might still fluctuate a bit, the new ones list is pretty solid all the way down to position 9. Who grabs the 10th spot remains to be seen. There are apparently quite a few people very close to each others results so just one or two censuses might decide that at the end of the month. Last month 10th spot required 11 303 new ones. It will be interesting to see, if the requirement drops. As of right now, that looks likely.

The monthly updates list will be a much harder battle. Last month your 61 181 entries gave you position 9. Looking at the list for this month, I predict that identical result will not guarantee a place in the top 10.

As for the overall top 10 lists... as months roll by, the minimums needed to enter the lists go up. They are are not impossible though... Lohan75 is a good example of that. I just checked and he became a member on May 7th. Now, less than four months later, he is about to break into the top 10 new ones list and if he goes on at approximately same rates, by the end of year, Hybuir will lose his 10th place on the alltime updates list.

Now, I am going to brag a bit, sorry! The truth is, however, that while getting on to the overall lists has gotten more difficult, the difficulty to get to position 1 has increased much more and even getting into top 3 is a great challenge.

1974ER says:
Jul 04, 09 09:12
Note to self: 4M+ updates, position 3. Approaching 700k+ new, also 3.

That is an old comment of mine. Today, those values would put someone on 5th place on the new ones list and barely on the 4th on the updates list.

If I quit censusing right now and came back in a year... I could probably expect to be still in the top 5 of the new ones list and likely at worst, 3rd on the updates list. :D And in light of several months results recently, I would not be surprised, if I had maintained position 1 on both. :D

EDIT: And, no, I am not planning to quit... rather, I am looking forward to 11 111 111 updates. :D

I would census more, if it wasn't so sloooooow :(
Currently I do 4 servers both factions and 7 servers just one faction.
This on top of the server I play on..

When I do a census sweep of all 12 servers (17 censi), it takes 1 -1? hour :(

Well, census length is heavily population dependant... I am pulling these figures from my head, so they might be slightly off... but I think the shortest ever censuses I have ever run lasted about 42 seconds on Silvermoon Horde and Magtheridon Alliance, the longest uninterrupted one something like 33 minutes 40 seconds on Argent Dawn Alliance.

I have had days when a single sweep of my "list" takes in excess of 7 hours and 5 to 6 is completely normal... But there are days when doing a sweep during early morning hours can be accomplished in under an hour.

Besides, you should do what you enjoy. Censusing isn't our job, as we don't get a salary. :D I run a lot of censuses, yes, but I can also spend long times playing just one or two characters, which reduces the updates gain, but is fun. If I didn't care about playing the game, I could push my figures up. And if someone actually paid me to census things, I could invest in an additional computer and another account and push the figures even higher....

I have seen people pull 75k+ updates in a single day so I know it's possible. However, it is also a rate that WILL burn a person out quickly. If memory serves me right that person won a single month with very high figures even though (s)he didn't even last the full month. Also, Balgair has done a month with 800k+ updates... but she didn't really enjoy that anymore, because it cut down her actual game time.

Would I be right in thinking that for big numbers :

Run the census at 20:00 - 21:00

PVP realms have least number of census-ers - but also the biggest A:H ratios so one side can rake in 100's new while the other a measly 10.

Also, from experience, the realms showing up with low populations here can simply mean that the census has been taken in the morning when populations are low.

In otherwords, there might be a realm that appears to have a low pop on the realm composite here, but is flagged as high/medium population on the list of realms when you log into wow.
In which case: go high numbers, go! :)

Perhaps I'm wrong on all counts ;)

Well, around 20-21 tends to be the peak time for most EU servers... but for really big numbers, one needs to census a LOT longer than just an hour a day. ;)

No comment on server type versus number of censusers observation, because I don't really pay attention to that while picking the servers I census only occasionally and those that I census regularly include several types. And most of the truly out of balance servers are of the PvE type.

Yes, that does indeed happen and is actually a permanent feature of several French and German realms especially. The numbers here often don't match the Blizzard figures, simply because the number of censuses is way too low on many realms.

I've made a list of 'hot tips' for servers listed as high pop in wow but with few updates here ;) see other thread. I hope I've got the data right! :)

Wynta, I see you have been using your hot tips as you are raking in high numbers of new characters and updates. Keep that up and you might go as high as 4th on both monthly lists... and next month, such rates will easily beat me as I am going to be spending a lot of time actually playing during the Harvest Festival and Brewfest, both of which will bring my numbers down, heavily. :D

hehe I don't think you need to worry about competition ;)

I'm just focusing on the enGB realms, and I'm ashamed to say I'm a stop-start obsessive, so I'm not very reliable long-term ><
- I'll try to find some new top-tips next month at least ;)

Hehe, I am not worried about competition... In fact, from WCR point of view, the more competition I have, the better for the site. :D Judging by the results of the past 22 months, I set a pretty high standard. Unless my memory fails me, I have been in the top 3 of both monthly lists ever since I started censusing in November 2008.

Congrats on the 11M! My housemove is mostly over so I can start looking towards 7M soon, but at a rather slower pace than you; that 800k updates in a month was indeed way beyond what I can sustain lol, think it came one month when I was totally bored and had nothing else to do with my time, but nowadays I've got a rather busier life so find it harder to make time (and when I do have time for WoW, I'm playing my main characters too much ;))

I am glad to hear you survived your move. :) Maybe you should just aim for 6 666 666 first, that's not so far of, it's doable in two months even at quite leasurely pace. :)

EDIT: Seems I "overshot" a little and ended up with 11 112 410 instead of 11 111 111. Oh well... :D

Hehe true, but I'll never manage to be that accurate ;) May not be on so much for a bit anyway, just 2 days after moving in with him, my bf got a Cataclysm beta invite... I'm still not in on my account but I have a little troll druid on his now, playing that when he's at work ;)

Wondering how long it'll be before you've got double what anyone else has, not too long at current progress rate I think!

That will still take a while. Even if you did absolutely nothing, I would need to beat 12 951 1346 on the updates... and 2 425 108 on the new ones. Theoretically, about to December 31st to double your updates and to around April 15th, 2011 for the new ones. More realistically perhaps, late January for updates, somewhere around June, July for the new ones. And since I don't think you are planning on quitting, those timetables won't hold. :D:D:D

Maybe... around March, April for the updates... and around Christmas 2011 for the new ones? One never knows what future holds... I have been very lucky to hit such high numbers. WotLK release just after a few days after I joined here, certainly gave my figures a BIG boost back then. :D
