Is it possible that the realm stats are wrong? For example I've been running the client for a (long) while on HellScream (US) and the total number of horde players detected has always been under 4000. However, this http://www.warcraftrealms.com/census.php?serverid=77 claims more than 10000 players.
Is there any explanation?

First, welcome aboard. Now that you have registered, you can get credit for your future submissions. 
As to your question... both figures are right. Your under 4000 is how many you have saved in your .lua file. The more than 10000 figure reflects the total efforts of all census users who have censused Hellscream within the past 30 days.
