After five very rough days...

Post by bringoutyourdead »

In spite of all the problems Blizzard has had...
our database stats page shows there are now over 170 thousand level 100 characters.

I guess the people playing those characters will have beaten all the raid bosses by New Years eve.. and will be gone from the game until the next raid release.

Most wanted and server submission pages are looking good, but could be better .. too many red numbers.

Blizzard just ate 5 days of income...

So the next question will be.. who ritually falls on their sword?

I'm impressed how many reached 100 so fast! And not all of those will be gone, I'm one of them, and not a rush through content and quit type at all - I was just lucky enough to get online before the queue both days over the weekend, and given I wasn't about to log off to get stuck in a 6 hour queue, I kept on playing... ;)

So WoW is up to 10 million subscribers, that's a pretty incredible increase, no wonder the servers fell over so badly, I imagine Blizz scaled them down a tad when subs were way below that!

Guess it was fairly visible from my server alone, went from not queued (full hour long census showing 4k at peak times, I've always believed cap to be 4.5-5k?) before WoD, to 4k in queue before they lowered the cap to deal with stability problems... so yeah, we've got about 8-9k players now, double what was there before.

Highest census I've seen so far is 6.8k, ok, well over an hour so there'll be population shifts but still, wow, they did a good job increasing the numbers allowed in to help the queue situation - although trying to actually access garrisons is another matter as the instance servers do not cope so well... :P

10M is still not an excuse for servers to crash..

Even last night, we had a whole hour of "World Server is Down", and when it came up, again Garrisons went in and out of phase..

Blizzard have failed this launch BIG TIME..
5 days free game time, which it seems noone have gotten yet, is just not enough...

I'd say it's a very good explanation, whether you think it's a good enough "excuse" or not. Nobody could've predicted that many people returning, and given how people always flood into the higher pop realms, with a ton of others returning to said higher pop realms, it's no wonder we're overpopulated.

The problems yesterday are down to them trying to lessen the queues by raising the population cap, people whine if they have to queue, they also whine if there's problems, well, it has to be one or the other, unless you want to move to a lower pop realm, plain and simple! You choose to move to a full realm, you have to put up with the bad side too, hardware can only handle so many people at one time.

In the past 24 hours the level 100 count has doubled from 170 to 340 thousand.

Stability have improved (but still wonky, e.g. Draenor went down with a bang last night and Garrisons are still suffering from Phasing), but people eventually get there..

Today has been incredibly stable, I've even been able to hearth to my garrison at peak time! Still seeing as high as 6.9k in censuses, so numbers are not lower, looks like this morning's maintenance must've finally got the right spot on server stability.

(Yes I know there's instance issues, however that seems a separate matter... or maybe people hammering Molten Core are making those servers overload instead and giving the garrisons a rest lol :P)

Well, another week on and actually, I think that week of problems is going to turn out to be the best thing that happened to the game in the longterm, at least for us on crowded realms. The population cap increases (seen censuses of 7.9k+, never got over 5k previously) means for the first time since Wrath, in the 2-3 months after a patch/expansion, I can log in at peak times without a queue, it is incredible! :D

And the phasing of people to reduce zone crowding, while mildly annoying when someone says a rare's up and it isn't up in my phase, is great overall due to being able to actually complete quests without ending up hating every other player on the server. Moderately crowded is tolerable, it used to be ridiculously overcrowded, now it's so much improved, I love it. One week of annoyance is a price well worth paying for these improvements I think, no more cursing all those incomers who ruined my nice server ;) Although I do hope they enforce some transfer restrictions on full realms before we balloon even further and hit whatever the new population cap is, it'd be nice to just stay as we are now!

Phasing have indeed become MUCH better..

Now, we only need Blizzard to increase /WHO limit from 50 to 75 or 100, so Census will have to make less runs and thus run faster..

My personal guess would be, that a heavy realm like Draenor, where a typical census takes 55-65 minutes, could be done in less than 15 minutes..
