Names names names!

Post by Hybuir »

People have some weird stories to how they got their names. Mine is relatively simple, I misspelled Junior when my right hand was one key to far to the left. Look at your keyboard

Code: Select all

H -> J
Y -> U
B -> N
U -> I
I -> O
R == R
How about you :)

Haha, I like that one. I usually find a Latin word list and scroll around 'til I find one I like.

My male character name is usually Aestus, it means "passionate fire" or something of the ilk. Ceto is Grecian in origin, "the personification of the dangers and horrors of the sea."

My character in FFXI was a female Hume named Rheakira. Rhea is my wife's middle name and Kira is my daughter's name. When WoW got loaded and I made a Male Troll, Rheakira didn't fit. So being open-minded about interracial relationships I created Rheasson, the offspring of Rheakira and a long-forgotten one night stand.

Now my wife has her own account with Cailet as her character. I created an alt to party with her named Caisson.

Grew up in the Scottish Highlands, and although I never learned Gaelic myself, I was used to seeing placenames and words in Gaelic, and thought some of those words could make good names. So when I was making my characters I took a Gaelic dictionary, plugged some suitable words in and took the ones that sounded alright! General list is as follows, and generally they make the class or race pretty obvious :P

Balgair = rogue
Sgoildubh (properly sgoil dubh) = magic (literal translation black school, although she's a mage and I think of her as making good magic not bad!)
Droch = evil (warlock)
Cathach = warrior
Tairbh = bull
Sagart = priest
Sealgair = hunter
Uaine = green (orc)
Beag = small (dwarf)

A lot of the names I wanted just looked weird in the format we have to use. So I used Spanish because I could mix the words around a little easier. Got a more lyrical result.

The first character I created was Adelyse. I wanted to use NiennaMiriel, or Nienna (elven name generator - cousin to hobbit name generator), but they were taken, so I hit randomize a ton of times and all of a sudden Adelyse popped up. I thought that it was a perfect elf name. (Long A)

I created Helene a bit later. Again, I was feeling uncreative, so I hit randomize a ton of times. And Helena popped up. I realized that I liked Helene (pronounced hell-ayne, not hel-een).

I put the pronunciation in there because it's fun, and because no matter how many times I pronounced my characters' names for my ex, he still pronounced them wrong. ARGH! lol

That's pretty much my story too.

Rhiasi, Sianni, Siani, Lytara, Nyktasia, Alyanah, Tyger, and Zyphyr are all old D&D characters of mine. Rhiasi (Ree-AH-see) is always a Cleric class, Sianni (See-AH-knee) is always a Mage class, Lytara (Lah-tah-rah) is always a Druid, Tyger (Tiger) is always a Rogue class, Alyanah (Ah-LEE-ah-nah) is always a Paladin, and Zyphyr (Zephyr like the wind) is always a Bard class. Zyph is currently acting as a name holder in my character list until Blizzard finally gets a Bard class added. I can't think of these characters in any other class than the one they were build to be originally!

Nykkita, my little warrior, is named so because I'm a fan of the La Femme Nikita TV series. Narcyssa is actually a character name I used in an old Vampire: The Masquerade game, and then her named showed up in the Harry Potter books!

Yes, yes, yes... I'm an alt-a-holic

Catriona = just liked the sound of it!

^^ her pet is called 'Lyonesse' (a moonstalker), the name is taken from the myth of the Land Of Lyonesse which was supposed to have sunk off the coast near where I live)
