Bad news for Warhammer Online?

Post by Rollie »

So it has been announed that EA has acquired Mythic. EA doesn't exactly have a good track record with MMO's. Wonder if they will fare any better with these than others they have tried their hand at.

Mythic just got Sigil'd! Or maybe, Warhammer got Vanguarded? EA is an all-around bad company, I've heard. Very hard on its employees. (Has this come up on these forums before?)

I usually take open pot shots at EA =)

I used to work for them =x

From a work point of view, it wasn't too bad, not like it was at Acclaim. But the whole corporate bullshit was worse at EA than any other company I have worked for. And when they pulled the rug from under us, it was enough to get me to leave the industry and rejoin the 'real world'.

I'm depressed, WAR was the MMO I was looking forward to and from what I hear the only remaining MMO out there that interests me (Age of Conan) is about to meet the same fate :(

I guess after WoW I'll buy a console or something :/

I didn't realize that she was still going strong. 50 pages of comments to that post 2 years ago.

I can attest to everything mentioned in the whole argument. I've been there, done that. And do not care to go back there again. I have some friends trying to recruit me back in, but I just cannot believe in my heart that anything will be different, even at this new start up company. While the allure is there, the pay off just does not justify it. I'm not a young single person anymore, I'm a husband, and a father, and I now value my life outside of the office too much to go back to that.

THe console from Nintendo looks pretty cool. I personally have always loved Nintendo's unique games.

I know my husband showed me a link somewhere, where it said it will retail around $200! Sure beats Playstation 3 $400+.

Just wait till EA comes knocking with a big ole' fat paycheck for the rights to warcraftrealms.com :P

J/k... I know you'd rip it up and laugh in their faces. I can't help, but try and think positive about this move by Mythic. I love the ideas behind WAR and I can't doomcast it just for going to EA even though EA has killed over a dozen MMO projects. I want to believe EA aquired Mythic for the same reasons they picked up Will Wright. They are sick of their failures and want to get the right team that can do things the right way.

The problem is though EA likes to consume and steal the best parts of these studios. They offer the big shots a fat paycheck and send the hardworking teams packing. In a topsy turvy market I can't really blame the big shots for taking the pay checks. Even though Mythic says they aren't going to get dissolved... all it takes is one MMORPG screw up and you may never hear from Westwood.... err Mythic again.

So positively speaking we could see Mythic getting their hands on a lot of PIMP titles. This means you could see Mythic developing the next Ultima Online title (probably to be canceled :P haha) or any of the many IPs that EA owns rights to. There is a lot of possibility if EA leaves Mythic alone to do their thing. So far it looks like that is what Mythic is here to do... use the assets EA has available to enhance their products and not let EA dictate what should be done.

And I'm not worried about EA pushing MMO titles faster than they are ready at Mythic. Mythic proved with DAoC that they can get a good base product out the door in a quick time and quickly polish it.
