PvE vs PvP server

Post by bluegoldfish »

Hello.

I've watched some PvP movies, now I've started to want to go to a PvP server. Haven't started my character yet.

PvE has no ganking

PvP does

PvE allows you to go place

PvP limits where you can go, i.e your territory.

I would like to go to a PvP server but I hate being ganked.

You can go everywhere in PvP, you just need to be more careful in contested territory since you're automatically flagged for PvP. If you really hate being ganked, and that overshadows everything else, just roll on a PvE server. You can still /pvp or BG when you want to spice things up a little.

Yeah, if you really hate being ganked you're better off rolling on a pve server and doing battlegrounds or typing /pvp when you want to pvp. I started on a pve server myself back at release, and after a month I switched to a pvp server to get some action. Mind you, this is before the days of battlegrounds, and back on my pve server no one EVER had their flag on for pvp, except for the ever existant Southshore - Tarren Mill zergfest (which got boring after a few times.) So back then if you wanted a lot of pvp, you rolled on a pvp server. Now, you can roll on a pve server and still get a decent amount of pvp, all on your terms. A pvp server means getting ganked while questing, raid groups of the opposite faction mauling you in blackrock mountain/outside Zul Gurub, boat/zep camping (which is a lot of fun, btw :P ) and more. PvP servers allow for more variety at 60, but a more painful road to get to 60. It's up to you :D

I prefer to see a PvP realm as a PvE realm with extra. Noone will gank you inside instances, and you can mostly prevent all fighting outside as well, without even going that much out of your way.

It's a different story since they removed 'world PvP' though, I really miss the Tarren Mill and Crossroads<->Astranaar battles.

Personally I don't feel that pvp servers are as bad as most say. Like a few days ago, I was riding on the coast of Azshara and a whole horde raid was at one of those necropolis nodes killing the undead for runes and scourgestones. I had 2 come over to me, root me(druid) and then I /wave /hug and they left me alone. They just didn't want me to AOE and start killing them or taking their mobs and I appreciated that and walked around. On a PVP server it is best to know your limits, in that situation they were being somewhat friendly and I knew I needed to leave the area before they changed their minds.

Then other times I am fighting in EPL and someone gets me while I am eating or on another mob. It just all depends on the person behind the computer. If you do not enjoy end game raiding or feel that you cannot get into a large guild, then I would roll on a PVP server at all cost. I got a warrior to 60 and then found out that BGs ruined any world pvp (yeah some happened on PVE servers) and it was hard finding a friendly, like minded guild. I now have a level 60 rotting away on my account that will probably never be played regularly. Many days /played just down the drain.

It just really depends on your server, the alliance/horde ratio and the time of day which you play.

That's very true. Blizzard has said they intend to implement things to encourage world pvp again, which is definitely a good thing. IMO they need to remove dk's from killing "civilians"... or at least have the civilians run away when they get hit by AOE instead of attacking you and making you run, haha.

Life is better at 60 on a pvp realm than a pve realm imo. It just might take you longer to get there. If you're like me however and play overnight offpeak hours though, it's not usually that big of a problem. But after all, the final decision is up to you. :P

Having been on both types, I'll be staying on PVE, although I might roll an alt on a PVP realm sometime for the rare occasion I actually feel like PVP. Usually I'm much happier to just get on with questing, exploring etc without having to watch over my shoulder all the time - when I was on a PVP server I ended up too scared to go anywhere or do anything except in the middle of the night, I got ganked so much, and that was not fun.

Having said that, this was way back before BGs existed, and all the PVP was outdoors then, so I imagine PVP servers aren't so bad now. But it's just not my thing.

Well iv never been on a PvE server but i find PvP alot of fun. PvP is most fun when you get into those raids out side tarrenmill witch everyone should of experianced before :D

But its good to have a balance between servers but imo PvP is really fun when you get caught in world PvP.

PVP is fun for a rogue. Currently, I prefer the PVE just due to less time investment needed to farm required mats for raiding. PVP does spice it up nad keep it interesting, as long as its done in fun and not spite.

Funny that you're a rogue and say this, as a great percentage of rogues on pvp servers are made specifically for ganking and griefing :P Good to know not all rogues are this way ;)

I do my fair share. Don't get me wrong. I love cracking skulls open, its great. But then again, I'd hate to be killing an elite, kiting it with cripple/gouge, and then have some ass gank me at 2%. So I wait for the person to kill their mob, THEN i gank them :)

Gotta have some dignity :)

Personally, I like PvP servers better. I have some alts on PvE servers and it is not all that different. There is always a risk of being ganked when in a contested zone, yes, but I think that makes it a lot more interesting. And like Oiseaux said yes it does depend on the person behind the computer. Some days I like to pal up with alliance and help them or they help me. And some days I really really feel like killing any alliance on sight (or trying my best to). On pvp servers you are safe in your capital cities, instances, and territories (just dont /pvp). If you like the risk of the unknown go pvp if you want to play it safe and really think ganking is annoying and would not like that to be done to you then go for pve. What ever type you choose there will be pvp, just on a pvp server there might be more of it.
When I'm not in my right mind, my left mind gets pretty crowded.

I originially rolled on a PvE server and have that toon to 57 so I'm going to keep playing him and get 60 and maybe get some Tier armor. But as soon as he hits 60, and I pass on my Officer duties to another guildie and finish up some things I'll be going to a PvP server. Already looking at a few, and I'll probally go Horde. Since there more Alliance which to me means more to kill, but also more to attack me. :) I'm going to love it.

It's gotta be EST server though, playing on a server 10 hours behind you sucks.

I have played the most on PVE, only an lvl 29 alt in PvP, and as I like to wander alone discover all places etc. I've been quite fine

But I have to say that when you're active(I mean awake like drinking some coffee) PvP servers are more thrilling.
